Have center console or interior, central airbags similar to SRS curtain airbags ever been considered?
In a side-impact collision, curtain airbags deploy -- typically from above the driver side/penger front -- in order to minimize whiplash and to cushion the impact of the penger's head against the window or B pillar. However, this can only reduce the number of whiplash-related fatalities and injuries in a side-impact collision by half at best. In order to attempt to eliminate whiplash completely, there would need to be curtain airbags on both sides of the penger and driver. This would require have two curtains, or one large airbag, in the middle that may come down or expand upward between them. Has this ever been done? If not, why? What are the drawbacks of such an airbag?
